Energy have reopened their rail head at Guan Cae Gurwen
after many years, for the movement of coal from East Pit
to Onllwyn Washery. EWS brought out the first loaded train
consisting of 25 MEA's on Friday 16th January 2009 and these
will replace the existing service from Parc Slip when it
closes during February 2009. Planning permission dictates
that 50% of the output from East Pit must travel by rail.
It was also sad to see the remnants of what was once a massive
rail operation that constantly used 3 x Class 08 locomotives
for its operation.
