Tidal Soap Opera

Celsa, similar to ASW is regarded by enthusiasts as a 'rich source' for shunting locomotives, due to the quality of supply and the adverse conditions that they have to work in. The following log details all the remote and non remote shunting locomotives that have worked in Tidal / Celsa since the latter re-opened in June 2006.

 

08466 Brillo

# First remote pilot to return to the Tidal Sidings during June 2006.

# Suffered from very poor availability during the first four months and major electrical problems during early October 2006.

# Moved to Margam Depot for repairs during October 2006, who ultimately diagnosed and replaced the main generator with the assistance of the Cowans Sheldon 75 Ton crane during July 2007.

# Whilst it was generally appreciated that it was still not performing as it should have done following the main generator change, it was sent to the Knuckle Yard for acceptance trials before returning to Tidal Sidings in September 2007.

# It continued to suffer from poor availability and major electrical problems until it was diagnosed with a faulty auxillary generator and stored in Tidal Sidings during late 2008.

# Moved to Margam Depot in May 2009 for an auxillary generator change with newly stored 08770 Benny.

# However, problems continued and it was moved to Toton Depot for further repairs in July 2009 as Margam Depot was closing.

# It was laced on the September 2010 disposal list.

 

08578 (Non Remote)

# Dragged DIT from Margam Knuckle Yard in the early hours of 4th January 2011, following the failure of all three Tidal pilots (08706, 08804 and 08921 Pongo).

# Returned to Margam Knuckle Yard in the early hours of 9th January 2011 following the arrival of 08632, 08888 and repair of 08804.

 

08605

# New to Tidal Sidings during early May 2010 as a direct replacement for 08921 Pongo.

# Moved to Toton Depot during early October 2010 for a C xam and a low power fault.

 

08630 Bob Brown (Non Remote)

# Dragged DIT from Margam Knuckle Yard in the early hours of 4th May 2010, following the failure of 08921 Pongo and continuing problems with 08752 Lenny.

# Moved to Toton Depot for a C xam and repairs to the auxillary generator on 12th July 2010, being replaced by 08921 Pongo.

 

08632

# New to Tidal Sidings with a remote control only restriction imposed during early January 2011 to replace 08706 with shifted cranks.

# Suffered from speed control and main control fuse problems upon arrival, requiring the immediate assistance of Toton Depot fitters.

# Moved DIT to ADJ at the end of Feruary 2011. Thereby bringing to an end of the Tidal Soap Opera.

 

08706

# New to Tidal Sidings during early June 2010, as support to, 08605 and an ailing 08752.

# Suffered a disintegrated coupling on the radiator end and restricted to 'push-pull' working from the cab end during September 2010 on the Celsa Pilot turn.

# Moved to Toton Depot for repairs in late October 2010, being replaced by 08921 Pongo.

# Returned from Toton Depot following repairs during mid December 2010, replacing 08888

# Suffered a shifted crank soon after arrival during mid December 2010 and moved to Toton Depot during early January 2011, being replaced by 08632.

 

08752 Lenny

# Returned to Tidal Sidings during September 2006 without its nameplates, which were removed whilst it was in store at Doncaster Carr Depot.

# Suffered a shifted crank during February 2007 and moved to Eastleigh Depot for repairs.

# Returned to Tidal Sidings during April 2007.

# Suffered accident damage to its vacuum exhauster during May 2007 and moved to Margam Depot for repairs, which included its removal and plating over.

# Returned to Tidal Sidings during October 2007.

# Moved to Margam Depot for a D xam during August 2008

# Returned to Tidal Sidings during October 2008.

# Sent to Canton Depot for tyre turning during November 2008.

# Suffered a catastrophic engine failure during May 2009 and moved to Margam Depot for an engine change with 09003 and fitment of a reconditioned main generator, which was installed on the penultimate day of Margam Depot's official closure.

# Returned to Tidal Sidings during late August 2009 and almost immediately the reconditioned main generator was deemed to be faulty.

# Sent back to Margam Depot for its old main generator to be re-fitted during late August 2009.

# Returned to Tidal Sidings during September 2009.

# Suffered a bent side rod during December 2009 and promptly straightened out locally.

# Suffered braking problems and other mechanical and electrical faults during early February 2010 and was sent to Toton Depot for repairs including a C xam and air receiver examination.

# Returned to Tidal Sidings during early April 2010 and suffered intermittent braking / remote problems till early May 2010.

# Suffered a sheared traction motor gear during mid June 2010 and moved to Toton Depot at the end of June 2010 for repairs.

 

08770 Benny (Non Remote)

# Moved to Tidal Sidings during April 2007 as a spare loco, following the loss of the Onllwyn contract and unreliability of the other remote pilots.

# Suffered a big end failure and moved to Margam Depot for repairs during mid August 2007

 

08782 Castleton Works

# New to Tidal Sidings during the end of April 2007.

# Suffered a shifted crank during July 2007 and moved to Eastligh Depot for repairs.

# Sent to Eastleigh Yard following repairs during November 2007.

# Moved to Fowey Harbour during February 2008

# Moved to Aleaxndra Dock Junction during July 2008

# Returned to Tidal Sidings during August 2008.

# Moved adjacent to the old ASW Wagon Shops between February and May 2009 for onward movement to Toton Depot for repairs, which was subsequently retracted.

# Sent to Canton Depot for new brake blocks during Oct 2009.

# Suffered serious electrical wiring failure from behind the control cubicle during December 2009 and moved to Toton Depot during mid January 2010 for repairs.

# New to Tidal Sidings during mid January 2010 to replace 08782 Castleton Works.

# Suffered intermittent power problems since its arrival and a new governor actuator was fitted during mid February 2010.

# Sent to Canton Depot under its own power for a brake block change during mid March 2010.

# Returned to Toton Depot during late April 2010, being replaced by 08921 Pongo.

# New to Tidal Sidings late November 2010 from Toton Depot to replace 09022 which was being sent to Eastleigh.

# Suffered from remote problems during December 2010 and attended to by Toton Depot fitters.

# Moved DIT to ADJ at the end of January 2011 with 08888.

# Returned to Tidal Sidings from Sheerness Steel Works during December 2006.

# Suffered auxillary generator problems during April 2007.

# Moved to Margam Wagon Works for storage during the end of November 2007.

# A side rod was removed during August 2008 and fitted to 08646.

# The remote control equipment was removed during April 2009 and fitted to 08757 undergoing remote control conversion at Toton Depot.

# This is the only locomotive from the pilot batch of remote controls not to have worked Tidal Sidings.

# Underwent a C xam at Margam Depot during October / November 2006 before being moved to Sheerness steel Works during December 2006.

# New to Tidal Sidings during the beginning of October 2010, replacing 08605.

# Out of service during most of November 2010 with remote control problems.

# Moved to Toton Depot during mid December 2010 with a remote problem causing loss of power, being repalced by 08706.

# Returned toTidal Sidings during early January 2011 following repairs at Toton Depot, replacing 08921 Pongo.

# Remote aerial replaced during mid January 2011 due to poor signal reception.

# Moved DIT to ADJ at the end of January 2011 with 08804.

 

08921 Pongo

# Returned to Tidal Sidings during August 2006.

# Suffered a shifted crank during October 2006 and sent to Crewe Electric for wheelset repairs

# Returned to Tidal Siidngs without the shifted crank being repaired during February 2007.

# Moved to Eastleigh Depot for repairs to its shifted crank during early May 2007.

# Returned to Alexandra Dock Junction during November 2007.

# Moved to Tidal Sidings during July 2008 and suffered another shifted crank within the month.

# Sent to Springs Branch Depot for repairs to its shifted crank during August 2008

# Underwent repairs to its shifted crank and an E xam during January 2010.

# Returned to Tidal Sidings during mid February 2010.

# Suffered from a multitude of electrical, mechanical and remote control defects during February and March 2010.

# Dropped a valve during early April 2010 and moved to Toton Depot for repairs.

# Returned to Tidal Sidings during late April 2010.

# Moved to Toton Depot during early May 2010 for repairs to its remote control equipment.

# Returned to Tidal Sidings during mid July 2010, replacing 08630 Bob Brown which was temporarily being used as the Spare loco.

# Movedto Toton Depot during early October 2010 for repairs to oil leaks. (09022 was brought up from Margam Depot to replace it as the Spare loco.)

# Returned to Tidal Sidings during late October 2010, replacing 08706.

# Suffering from remote control problems from late October to early November 2010.

# Suffered three shifted cranks during mid December 2010 and moved to Toton Depot during early January 2011, being replaced by 08888.

 

08951 Fred

# Returned to Margam Depot during early April 2007, where it was given a C xam and robbed parts were replaced after spending several years in storage at Allerton Depot.

# Following repairs at Margam Depot, it was moved to Tidal Sidings during mid April 2007.

# The main generator was replaced at Margam Depot between May and June 2008 using the Cowans Sheldon 75T crane.

# The bottom half of the radiator was refurbished at Margam Depot during January 2009.

# The brake blocks were changed at Canton Depot during May 2009.

# Moved to Toton Depot for a wheelset change during July 2009.

# Placed into store at Toton Depot during July 2010

 

09017 Tidal Sidings 20th February 2010

09017 Leo (Non Remote)

# New to Tidal Sidings on the 3rd May 2009 as a spare loco, having been retrieved from storage in Newport Docks awaiting movement to Toton Depot for an E xam, following the failure of 08782 and continuing unreliability of 08752.

# Moved to Toton Depot for an E xam on 3rd March 2010.
